Pallet Racks

Pallet Racks

Weland Pallet Rack is designed with a focus on future requirements for rational material handling. The pallet rack's design promotes a well thought-out function with a high level of safety. Both end panel posts and support beams are made of closed profiles for the maximum bearing strength. All components are hot dip galvanised. The Weland Pallet Rack is dimensioned and tested according to SS-EN 15512:2009 End protection should be used unless it is obviously unnecessary (other fixed obstructions behind the pallet rack) according to AFS 2006:4. Other suitable accessories include post protection and end panel protection (specified in SS-EN 15512:2009).

Standards and regulatory requirements

The harmonisation within the EU and the development of common standards has consequences for both manufacturers and users of warehouse management equipment. The official designation for pallet racks is Steel Static Storage Systems.

Applicable European standards for pallet racks

  • Application and maintenance of storage equipment. SS-EN 15635:2008
  • Tolerances, deformations and clearances. SS-EN 15620:2008
  • Specification of storage equipment. SS-EN 15629:2008
  • Adjustable pallet racking systems. Principles for structural design. SS-EN 15512:2009
  • Terms and definitions. SS-EN 15878:2010

Significant changes

The new regulations are accompanied by extensive requirements for all parties concerned. Equipment design, assembly and use are subject in future to a much greater degree of regulation than before.

Apart from a theoretical calculation of the capacity of the pallet rack, the components must also be subjected to physical testing. Risk classes with different tolerance requirements have been introduced. The storage equipment has to have clear specifications and a detailed user manual has to be enclosed. Safety issues are carefully regulated. User companies have to have a person responsible for storage equipment and assembly must be carried out by qualified persons. The standards contain provisions for use and risk analyses during inspections and assessment of damage.

The new European standards will increase the level of safety and promote European trade on equal terms. At Weland Lagersystem AB, we are part of the project where SIS is working with “steel storage systems”. Apart from pallet racks, the new standards will also affect traditional racks and cantilever racks.

The Swedish Work Environment Authority has also started to introduce new regulations for the use of pallet racks. In step with growing awareness of the new regulations, the requirements on manufacturers with regard to safety and information are increasing.

Contact us and we will help you sort out the concepts behind the EU standards and give you good advice as to how you have to work with pallet racks in order to be on the safe side.

AFS 2006:4

If risks may arise due to a collision, collision protection must be installed. Pallet racks must be equipped with protective devices that prevent the pallets from being pushed through the rack (i.e., so-called push through protection), unless this is manifestly unnecessary.

SS-EN 15512:2009

Collision protection with a height of not less than 400 mm must be placed next to the outer posts, where truck aisles cross.

Post marking

Posts are marked with a model designation, to ensure that the right load diagram is read.

Support beams

The support beams are marked with their model and length as guidance for reading from the correct maximum load sign.

Maximum load sign

The maximum load sign must always be set up and easily visible, to prevent incorrect loading of the pallet rack.

KG Knutsson

The K.G. Knutsson AB trading company is a Swedish wholesaler, focusing on the automotive industry and marine accessories, which was founded in 1946.

KGK is active in all of Scandinavia with a number of well-known brands in its the assortment and it sells products primarily via a dealer network, in which the majority of the stores in the Autoexperten distribution chain are part of the KGK Group.

The background to KGK Transmission's investment in vertical storage lifts is that all the materials for service and repair of transmission are handled in racks and mezzanines. This management method results in a poor use of the premises' space, relatively many balance errors and, above all, a long processing time.

With Compact Lift vertical storage lifts and Compact Store WMS from Weland Lagersystem, the efficiency is improved in several ways;there is both a much greater certainty in the balance and, simultaneously, shorter lead times for repairs.

Premould

Premould manufactures tool and plastic parts in varying series. They stock a great many tools and so, good order, rational handling and clean and protected storage is important. The vertical storage lift stores approx. 500 tools. The vertical storage lift has 100% pull-out for the load trays, so the tools can be handled easily with an overhead crane.

By placing a Compact Lift in a “tower” outside the premises, Premould in Huskvarna has increased the storage capacity in a smart way and freed up space on the premises. Moreover, they have installed a frame in the tower for a further vertical storage lift in the future. This will considerably ease the assembly when a further lift is to be installed. The service opening in the wall is ready-to-use and temporarily closed off, to ensure minimal disruption during future installation.

Theofils

Theofils handyman stores in Jönköping, Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö have a product range exceeding 9,000 articles, with a focus on furniture fittings.

When it was time to rebuild the company's warehouse in Jönköping, Compact Vertical Storage Lifts were the solution for increasing handling efficiency without any need to expand into larger premises.

After raising the roof to make it possible to fit in higher storage lifts, 2 Compact Twins and 2 Compact Lifts were installed with load trays suitable for up to 500 kg. 2,500 of the company's articles are now managed in the vertical storage lifts and they can serve the stores with daily deliveries. This results in good local service for the market, without the need for larger stocks in the stores.

TePe Munhygienprodukter

TePe Munhygienprodukter in Malmö manufactures, among other things, 11 million toothbrushes a year.

To cope with increased volumes, the production of toothbrushes has been moved to new premises designed for an improved flow. The store for the raw materials and semi-finished goods is placed next to toothbrush production and in between stands a Compact Lift.

The vertical storage lift is filled from the store side, and in the production area the operators fetch components according to an order specification. This saves time, since the operators don't need to look for parts in the store and the truck drivers, on the other side of the wall, can concentrate on handling the goods without any risk of incidents.
